About This Product

After the apparatus is filled with water and cleared of trapped air, a leafy shoot cut under water is fitted through the connection so the joint is airtight. A visible air bubble is introduced into the capillary, its starting point noted, and its movement measured over a fixed time. Repeating the test under light, shade, wind, humidity or temperature changes shows how these factors affect the rate of water uptake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What does the potometer actually measure?
It measures water uptake by the cut shoot, shown by air-bubble movement in the capillary. This is used as an indirect estimate of transpiration rate.
